NAME: Kellie Foster aka @kellie_keto
I don’t have a blog, but I just started a YouTube channel for vlogging!
WHERE DO YOU LIVE?
TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:
I’m a 24 year old chemical engineering student finishing up the final semester of my degree. Upon graduation I will be working in the nuclear industry. When I’m not studying or in the gym you can probably find me browsing through instagram or reddit, trying out new keto recipes, hanging out with friends or playing pokemon.
YOUR KETO JOURNEY:
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN KETO?
I have been keto since August 2015, so about 17 months
HOW DID YOU COME TO THE KETO WAY OF EATING?
It was recommended to me by my crossfit coach. My initial reaction was “no way, I could never give up carbs!” But I agreed to try it out for 30 days, and by the time the 30 days were up I saw no reason to stop and now here we are 17 months later.
WHAT KIND OF RESULTS HAVE YOU GOTTEN FROM EATING KETO?
The most amazing results I could ever imagine. I lost 90 lbs and reached my ultimate goal weight. I ate at maintenance with keto for about a month and now I’m continuing to eat keto as I enter my first bulk. Losing, maintaining, gaining- keto is amazing for all three!
HAVE YOU HAD ANY SETBACKS OR CHALLENGES IN YOUR KETO JOURNEY?
Honestly I have not had any major setbacks. I think the greatest gift of keto is that it removed all of the serious challenges I faced with weight loss in the past. I used to struggle with binge eating disorder, and since starting keto I have not had a single binge. This way of eating is so satisfying and makes me feel so fulfilled that it eliminated the urge to binge.
Most of the challenges I faced were in the beginning of my journey when I didn’t really know exactly what I was doing; I didn’t know about needing to supplement electrolytes, or what a net carb was, etc. It’s thanks to all of the bloggers out there such as yourself, reddit, and my own personal experiences that I slowly accumulated all of the knowledge that I have now. I think the biggest challenge though was realizing that weight loss is not linear, and that the scale only tells one part of your weight loss progress. I remember so many weeks where the scale went up for no good reason, and the disappointment I would feel. When I finally was able to realize and accept that the scale can be a little bitch sometimes and that there was no rush to lose the weight, (I can phrase this differently if you don’t want this sort of language on your blog haha) I was much happier.
LET'S TALK ABOUT FOOD!
WHAT ARE A COUPLE OF YOUR GO-TO KETO MEALS?
I could definitely exist solely on chicken wings, steak, and salads
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE KETO ESSENTIALS YOU ALWAYS HAVE ON YOUR GROCERY LIST?
Eggs, chicken leg quarters, baby spinach, chicken wings, steak, unsweetened coconut milk, shiritaki noodles, ground beef/chicken/turkey, broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms and allllllllllll the cheese (but parmesan, halloumi, mozzarella and brie in particular)!
WHAT SITES, BLOGS, IG PAGES, FACEBOOK GROUPS, ETC… DO YOU GO TO FOR INFORMATION AND/OR INSPIRATION?
Reddit has been my ride or die source for information. There are quite a few very useful subs there, my favourites are;
In particular, xxketo is awesome for the ladies! Men and women tend to have very different experiences with the ketogenic diet and being able to read through the women’s only section was SO helpful.
And finally for tons of awesome recipe ideas (which are pulled from all kinds of blogs, youtubers, instagrammers, etc)
I am inspired daily by so many instagrammers that I don’t even want to make a list because I know I will forget someone important. In general just browsing through the community inspires the heck out of me- there are so many dedicated, kind and helpful people out there who make it amazing. I never thought I would find such an amazing group of people on a platform like instagram and I’m so so so glad that I did!
WHAT ARE THE TOP 3 TIPS YOU WOULD GIVE TO A KETO NEWBIE?
I actually just posted about this the other day! So for more details you guys could check out my instagram post but the bare bones of it is;
- Don’t count calories in the beginning, only worry about sticking to your carb limit. Just give yourself some time to adjust to the new way of eating before you start worrying about all of the macros and calories. I don’t think anyone should start counting calories until they are unable to lose weight without doing so. For me that didn’t happen until about 8 months into my weight loss journey.
- Supplement electrolytes so that you don’t experience keto flu!
- Commit to 30 days without cheating
YOU CAN ONLY EAT 5 KETO APPROVED FOODS FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, WHAT ARE THEY?
Chicken wings, steak, cauliflower, broccoli and butter
EXERCISE! DO YOU DO IT?!
DO YOU EXERCISE IN ADDITION TO YOUR KETO WOE? IF SO WHAT IS YOUR WORKOUT PLAN AND WHAT HAVE YOU FOUND TO BE MOST SUCCESSFUL?
I started off doing crossfit for about a year and it was incredible! However, when I moved back to Montreal for school I decided to try doing my own workout routine consisting of lifting and cardio. I absolutely fell in love with lifting and have transitioned more towards that. I lift 6 days per week now and I couldn’t be happier. I think the most successful workout plan is one that you enjoy so that you can stick to it.
DO YOU TAKE ANY SUPPLEMENTS, IF SO WHICH ONES?
Yes! Creatine, vitamin C, vitamin D, calcium, vitamin B12, and most importantly, ELECTROLYTES; sodium, magnesium and potassium.
WILL YOU SHARE ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE KETO RECIPES WITH US?!
Oven baked chicken leg quarters are a staple of mine because they’re so simple, delicious, versatile and very friendly to my student budget! I take the chicken quarters and brush them with soy sauce, then spice them however I feel like that day. Notable spice mixes are;
- Salt, pepper, garlic and onion powder
- Curry powder,
- Salt, pepper and dry basil
- Montreal chicken spice
- Any other delicious pre-made spice mixes I have kicking around
I bake them in the oven at 375 for an hour and they turn out perfect!
