KETO FAQ: Do You Have to Eat All Organic on Keto??

I often get the question: Do you have to eat all organic on Keto??

The answer is tricky. One of the important aspects of a Ketogenic Lifestyle, (aside eating a low carb, high fat diet) is eating healthy clean foods. Check out this video answering the question and scroll down for the Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen: A guide to buying organic produce.

One of the important aspects of a Ketogenic Lifestyle, (aside eating a low carb, high fat diet) is eating healthy clean foods.

One way to ensure that you are eating the healthiest food is to buy organic produce. However, for some people buying only organic food is not feasible. Organic Produce may be inaccessible  or out of budget, but this does not mean that you can live a ketogenic lifestyle.

We are all just trying to do our best.  One of the most helpful tools I have found is The Environmental Working Group's list of the Dirty Dozen and The Clean Fifteen.

These two lists break down which produce is safe to be purchased non organically and which produce is really high in pesticides and should be purchased organically if at all possible.

The Dirty Dozen is a list of produce that has the highest amount of Pesticide Residue:

  • Strawberries

  • Apples

  • Nectarines

  • Grapes

  • Spinach

  • Celery

  • Tomatoes

  • Peaches

  • Cherries

  • Bell Peppers

  • Cucumbers

  • Cherry Tomatoes

  • Potatoes*

  • Hot Peppers*

The EWG included Potatoes and Hot Peppers in the list of produce with dangerously high levels of pesticide residue.

The produce on the Clean Fifteen list is produce that is safe to be non organic. This list includes:

  • Avocado

  • Corn

  • Pinapples

  • Cabbage

  • Sweet Peas

  • Onions

  • Asparagus

  • Mangos

  • Papaya

  • Kiwi

  • Eggplant

  • Honeydew

  • Grapefruit

  • Cantelope

  • Cauliflower

Of course not all of this produce fits within a Ketogenic Lifestyle, but it is my opinion that the more we know about the food we are buying for ourselves and our family members the healthier we can be.
